Plot Summary:
Harmonix is the company that developed this game and they were founded with the mission of making the thrills of music-making accessible to non-musicians. This game enables musicians and non-musicians to play on different game play levels of expertise, to play Beatles' songs together at famous Beatles' venues. You are able to recreate their legendary vocal blend with three-part harmonies, for the first time with Rockband games, you can play instruments that look like the patented members' instruments, and rack up great scores and be rewarded with rare Beatles photos and audio. There can be up to six players with the ability to play three different controllers modeled after music instruments (a guitar controller for lead & bass guitar, a drum controller and 3 microphones for singing). Players simulate the performance of rock music by using their controllers to play scrolling on-screen notes and they gain points for how good they perform and lose points when they miss notes and keys. Each successful performance unlocks more songs and special features and allows you to battle for the highest score.

Critical Evaluation:
This game was highly criticized for the lack of Beatles' songs that were included into the game (there were not enough), but it can be noted that it has potential to add songs onto the game and include upgrades. They do have a long list of songs, but even my personal favorite Beatles' song is not included "Places I Remember" which says to me that there will be a large audience that agrees that their favorite song was not included. Rock Band can be a hard game to play, but they do have levels of game play that are suited for the most masterful player and the most beginner player. The graphics are good and the sound quality of the music is also well done. I think that the adding in the different popular Beatles' venues where they played was a nice touch and the detail of the instruments that can be with game are very original and different from the original game instruments. All in all I think that the game is fun and well done, but I do feel that more songs would make for longer play and less repetition in playing with the band and testing your skills.

Challenge Issues:
Mild lyrics, Tobacco references are why it is rated for teens but I cannot really imagine that these are very large challenge issues do the fact that young adults everyone are saturated by media that shows them worse things than tobacco and mild language.

Why this Video Game?
I chose this Wii game because I think that Rockband is wildly popular and I think that The Beatles are a very influential and timeless band with great songs. Wii gaming consoles are very interactive and can have a very positive group influence.

Plot Summary:
One Direction came out of the hit show "X- Factor" in 2010 and has now risen to fame with this album "Up All Night" which sings about love, empowerment, and having fun in life. Their main hit off of this record is "What Makes you Beautiful" and it speaks of all of the factors that make girls beautiful to boys and encourages girls to feel good about themselves and confident in love. Kelly Clarkson co- wrote the song "Tell me a Lie" that is catchy and about being with someone and wanting to hear certain things from them even if they are a lie. "Gotta b You" is the love ballad on this CD that warms ones heart and makes them believe that they will find love with someone that is just right for them. This Irish boy band has good vocals and very popular beats that make for a fun record that will keep you singing it all day.

Critical Evaluation:
This CD is fun and full of upbeat pop music that appeals to the young adult generation that loves it so. The boys have good voices, but the lyrics lack real life problems and emotions; they are rather shallow and about the fun, light aspects in life. The most popular song: "What makes you Beautiful" tugs at girls heartstrings and will be left stuck in your head thinking that every girl is beautiful in their own way. The lyrics are simple and are repetitively about love and the consequences of falling into it.

Reader’s Annotation:
One Direction is group of 5 guys from Ireland that sing pop love ballads, songs about being young and carefree, and feeling good enough about life to be "up all night".

Booktalking Ideas:
The popularity of boy bands throughout the ages

Genre:
Pop

Interest Age:
13+

Challenge Issues:
Sexuality
The songs in the CD are not overtly sexual, it is more the fact that they are 5 young handsome men that younger girls become obsessed with that is a challenge issue. I would combat it with the fact that the songs are about romance and love and they are not singing about anything obscene or about sex to their audience.

Why this CD?
One Direction is the latest craze in boy bands, and I think that a collection should reflect the popular titles of the time and generation that it is a part of.

Selena Gomez: When the Sun Goes Down [music recording]

Selena Gomez: When the Sun Goes Down  [music recording]

Los Angeles, California 2011
sound disc: digital; 4 3/4 in
Performers: Selena Gomez - Lead Singer, Ethan Robert - guitar, Joey Clement – bass, Greg, Garman – drums, Dane Forrest – keyboardsContents: Love You Like a Love Song, Bang Bang Bang, Who Says, We Own the Night (featuring Pixie Lott),Hit the Lights, Whiplash, When the Sun Goes Down, My Dilemma, That's More Like It, Outlaw, Middle of Nowhere, Dices (Who Says - Spanish Version)
Music Number: B004XWMXX8

Plot Summary:
This is a fun pop Cd with themes of love, coming of age, and teenage life. "Love you Like a Love Song" is her hit song on this CD and it is about liking a guy like the lyrics of a love song. Britney Spears wrote the song on this CD "Whiplash" and Katy Perry wrote the song "That's More Like It" both of which are fast tempo and empower women. This CD has definitely been a change of pace from her previous works and it encouraged her to record her songs as more of a woman and an artist.

Critical Evaluation:
The music is definitely pop dance music that has a catchy tune and will stick with you. I think that the tracks are fun, but they do not have a lot of depth; I can see why young adult audiences would relate to her songs. The basis of the songs relate to love, and friends, but they carry themes of finding and ending love.

Reader’s Annotation:
Selena Gomez is moving from her Disney roots into becoming a young woman in this fresh, new album about love and life.

Selena Marie Gomez (born July 22, 1992) was a child actor and Disney personality before she recorded her first album. She is known for these movies in her early career: "Wizards of Waverly Place", "Another Cinderella Story", and "Princess Protection Program".

“Roses”

Booktalking Ideas:
Selena is wildly popular with teenagers and in her Disney fan base.
You can relate her to her Disney show and to her boyfriend Justin Bieber.

Genre:
Pop

Interest Age:
14+

Challenge Issues:
Disney Star to Pop Star
I could see a challenge being that she was a popular Disney personality and now she is singing about more mature subjects. I would combat this with the fact that she is not overtly sexual and she sings mainly about love and empowerment.

Why this CD?
This CD is very popular on the radio, and Selena is a major celebrity featured in many of the teen magazines and in music, TV, and movies.

Neon Trees: Habits [music recording]

Nashville, TN : Mercury, p2010
1 sound disc : digital ; 4 3/4 in
Music #: B0013972-02 Mercury
Performers: Tyler Glenn, vocals, keyboards ; Chris Allen, guitar ; Branden Campbell, bass ; Elaine Bradley, vocals, drums
Contents: Sins of my youth, Love and affection, Animal, Your surrender, 1983, Girls and boys in school,  In the next room, Our war

Plot Summary:
Neon Tree's most popular song on this CD is named "Animal" and it's lyrics define letting go of your inhibitions in life and going for what one wants. Tim Pagnotta is the singer of the band, the guitarist, and the producer of this album that chronicles the voice of youth through songs about love, being yourself, making friends, and living the life that you want. "Sins of my Youth" and "1983" are powerful songs about maturing and going through adolescence to become strong individuals. The album is a light combination of punk music and dance pop music sue to its catchy lyrics, raspy voiced front man and the angst in the lyrics about love, life, and becoming the person that you were meant to be.

Critical Evaluation:
I don't see a large amount of substance in this CD about issues that are important. The CD focuses on the lighter things in life- meeting people, making friends adolescent angst, being with a girl. I think that it is good that there is a lack of profanity and overt sexuality, and that this is ideal for a younger audience.

Reader's Annotation:
Neon Trees album Habit is all about having fun in life, dancing and lyrics that will stick with you for days on end.

Booktalking Ideas:
This band in originally from southern California
The band "The Killers" brought them on tour with them & that is how they became famous
Play their most popular song "Animal" for the crowd

Genre:
Alternative Rock

Interest Age:
14+

Challenge Issues:
They appear to be a punk band that could have a "bad" influence. I would combat this with the fact that their songs do not contain profanity and that they are all actually members of the Church for Latter Day Saints. their music is not solely about relationships or women either, it is about life.

Why this CD?
It is popular right now, it is fun and the lyrics would pertain to a large YA audience.
